Abstract: We present mathematical models of fundamental cognitive structures of the brain — the cognitome, its constituent functional systems, and cellular ensembles — in line with the theoretical framework of K.V. Anokhin. Within this approach, we formulate models of various cognitive processes. We show that these models can be derived from a single general principle due to Helmholtz. Based on the obtained results, we develop formal models for several major theories, including a natural classification system; E. Rosch’s prototype theory of categorization, B. Rehder’s theory of causal models, G. Tononi’s integrated information theory of consciousness, and P. K. Anokhin’s theory of functional systems.
