Abstract: Cross-validation is one of the main methods for assessing the quality of solutions in machine learning. However, it remains unknown which of its varieties gives the most accurate results. To answer this question, it is necessary to learn how to calculate the variance of a cross-validation estimate. In this study, we will obtain some useful expressions for this quantity, which, in particular, make it possible to estimate the influence of the number of folds in splitting the sample. In the study, the effect of sample stratification during cross-validation has also been evaluated. To obtain a more pronounced difference, it has been proposed to perform the estimate using a procedure that is, in a sense, the opposite of stratification.
